An ICU bed bay is not just a bed with more equipment; it is a space planned around access, monitoring and the equipment that has to be reached in seconds. The layout decides whether a clinician can reach the airway from both sides, whether the monitor stays in view, and whether a floor mount gets in the way. The standard bed bay dimensions
An adult ICU bed bay is planned around a clear space that lets staff work from both sides of the bed and at the head. The design guidance sets a minimum clear area around the bed, with a head wall that supports the monitor, the gas outlets and the power, and enough clearance for a ventilator, a pump tree and a cart at the foot. The bay has to allow a 360-degree walk-around without trapping equipment, and the head of the bed usually faces the glass or the nurse station so the clinician has a line of sight to the monitors.

What the head wall and equipment rail hold
The equipment rail above the bed is the vertical spine of the bay. It carries the medical gas outlets — oxygen, medical air, vacuum, and the specific gases the unit uses — the electrical sockets, the monitor and the data ports. On the rail, the monitor sits at eye height, the ventilator and infusion pumps are within arm’s reach, and the outlets are grouped so a clinician does not have to reach across the patient to connect a line. The rail is also where a pendant or a boom mounts, and the choice between a fixed head-wall rail and a moveable pendant changes how much space the bay has for the cart and the walk-around.

Single-room vs open-bay and the layout trade-off
Whether the ICU is in single rooms or an open bay changes the equipment rail layout. A single room gives privacy and infection control but needs its own monitor, its own gas bank and its own power at the head wall, which raises the equipment count. An open bay shares the gas and nurse line but reduces isolation and can make the monitors harder to see. Most modern ICUs plan a bay that can convert, with a head wall that serves the patient in place and a glass or door that allows a room to be sealed when needed. The result is a bay designed for both the normal flow and the isolation case.
